<image:caption>From the iconic building to the unfading programs, the Atwood Center is still creating memorable outdoor education experiences, nearly 70 years later! After Seth B. Atwood donated funds for the Rockford Park District to purchase a section of what used to be Camp Grant for the purpures of environmental education, the Outdoor Recreation and Education Department and Atwood Park were created. Since 1957, the department has been offering a variety of outdoor programs in Atwood Park. Many of the same programs as the early days, such as archery, river study, and team building, are still offered today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While the first of Atwood Park’s programs were originally held out of the old lodge on the northeast side of the park (now Point of Interest 14), this building has been home of outdoor recreation and education programs since it was built in 1960. Many of the same programs as in the early days, such as archery and team building, still run today for school groups and clubs to experience. Atwood Center is open to the public every Saturday from 10am to 2pm where guests can view a Camp Grant exhibit, check out our animal room and meet live reptiles, or simply stop by to get more information about the park! From field trips and public programs to facility rentals and volunteer opportunities, Atwood Center has something for everyone!</image:caption>

<image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Birds of Prey Deck (2)</image:title>
<image:caption>Built in 2012, the Birds of Prey Deck is one of the only ADA accessible tree houses in the state and houses up to seven injured birds of prey year-round for everyone to enjoy. The birds housed in these enclosures can no longer survive in the wild on their own due to their injures. Take a walk around the deck and check out the educational signage along the way. Or even just enjoy a seat among the trees in this astonishingly accessible arboreal avian abode! Every Saturday at 1PM, Atwood Center puts on a free bird feeding. Open to the public, you can learn more about the birds from a knowledgeable staff member or volunteer!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Pump House (3)</image:title>
<image:caption>Built with limestone sourced from the nearby quarry (Point of Interest 18), the original foundation of this Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Pump House still stands almost a hundred years later, from the mid-1930's when it was first constructed! While it no longer has its roof or the water pump, walk along the maintenance road to check out the remnants! Can you find the stone that was purposely added to the structure due to it being shaped like the state of Illinois?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Mill Race (4)</image:title>
<image:caption>A great viewing spot of the Kishwaukee River, Mill Race is a hidden gem of the park! Not accessible when the river is high, use caution when hiking out to this location. The village of New Milford in part got its name from there historically being several mills in the area. The shallow bank of the river in this area has been used in the past to make buttons and McCormick reapers with the use of a water mill. Today, it is used for outdoor education programs, such as river study and field science for school groups.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Stairs (5)</image:title>
<image:caption>Get ready for a change in elevation – this set of 26 stairs is often called the “ABC” stairs. If you say one letter of the alphabet per stair, you’ll have recited the entire alphabet by the time you get to the bottom! These stairs provide the most straight shot from the Atwood Center and the Birds of Prey deck to the Kishwaukee River.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Rock Wall (6)</image:title>
<image:caption>Sitting just below the Hilltop Prairie (Point of Interest 8), the Rock Wall is a staple of the park in many ways. Now used as a backdrop for s’mores and campfire songs to end many school programs, this location was previously referred to as “Lone Oak Canyon” as a nod to the large Bur Oak tree on the left side of the limestone wall. Previously used as a climbing wall in the early days of outdoor recreation in Atwood Park, this is no longer available due to the wall’s porous limestone composition.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Hilltop Prairie (7)</image:title>
<image:caption>Atwood Park’s Hilltop Prairie is one of the best views in the park and is a rare “remnant prairie”. These prairies are quite uncommon, with over 99.9% of the original prairie ecosystem in the state destroyed as Americans moved west throughout the 1800’s. A great location to watch the sunset or sunrise, this scenic spot offers views of the Kishwaukee River and treetops beyond! It is believed that this was a stop for Black Hawk, Sauk leader during the Black Hawk War of 1832, to camp while traveling due to the sightlines of the river.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Hilltop Bench (8)</image:title>
<image:caption>Another CCC structure built in the mid-1930's – this bench is sometimes called the “kissing bench” in reference to the large red mark on the front that looks like a lipstick stain. You’ll find that the trail from the Hilltop Prairie to the Hilltop Bench has a bit elevation gain. Take a breather on the bench after the trek up the hill or get a group photo at this spot!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Atwood Lodge Zone - Target Pit (9)</image:title>
<image:caption>The Target Pit is a remnant structure of the rifle range from Camp Grant, which was established in 1917 and used to train nearly 60,000 soldiers during World War I. Soldiers would aim at targets that were displayed above the pit using a pulley system and shoot from across the river. Many of the trees you see today were not here then, making it more of an open range. A series of connected metal shutters run along the interior of the south wall and is thought to be used for communication.</image:caption>

      <image:title>East Zone - Trench Bunkers (11)</image:title>
<image:caption>These bunkers are remnant structures of Camp Grant. They were most likely used to prepare soldiers to deal with small arms fire, as they are fairly shallow. This allows soldiers to more easily enter and leave cover within the shelter but does not offer much protection from larger munitions. Soldiers would use these bunkers for protection during training exercises to score their aim when firing at targets.</image:caption>

      <image:title>East Zone - Fossil Creek (13)</image:title>
<image:caption>This creek, leading downhill towards the Kishwaukee is a common place for marine fossils from the Pleistocene Epoch to be found. During this time, the whole state was covered by glaciers, which deposited a wide variety of aquatic life across the land. Throughout the year, this is mainly a dry creek, but after a heavy rainstorm, you might just find water in it. This creek divides the four multi-use trail loops in the East Zone in half and provides some beautiful views where the trails connect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Before the Atwood Center as we know today was built in 1960, the old officer’s quarters from Camp Grant were used for programming in the early days of Atwood Park, but burned down, leaving only the foundation and chimney behind. Before it burnt down, this lodge was the main home base for camps like the Rockford Park District’s Wilderness Camp, among others. In photographs and newspaper clippings from the time, you can see that from this lodge, at this top of the hill, there was a toboggan run that went down towards the river.</image:caption>

This is a favorite location by many in the park due to its gorgeous river views coupled with the gentle swaying of the bridge as one passes over it. Unifying the park’s north and south side, this suspension bridge is symbolized in Atwood Park’s logo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Crowned the largest tree in the park, the area around this cottonwood was cleared for better viewing off of the trail. While a large limb has fallen since its discovery, its size is still notable. Photos of the tree alone just don’t do justice to show its magnitude, but we invite you to get a photo next to it to show its scale! Cottonwoods are known for getting to a large size and, as the name suggests, have fluffy, cotton-like seeds that flow in the wind in the late spring.</image:caption>

Atwood donated money for the Rockford Park District to purchase the 334 acres of former Camp Grant property that is now Atwood Park. Being the closest multi-use loop to the main trailhead parking lot and being classified as an easy/beginner trail, this is a great loop to start if you a new to mountain biking. This area is also known for its spring ephemerals, such as Virginia Bluebells and Dutchman’s Breeches. This is a great trail to hike, bike, or run along to view the flowers for the short time that they are blooming!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fairly centralized within Atwood Park, visitors can access a variety of multi-use trails, facilities, and points of interest from this location. This zone has the largest parking lot within the park in terms of parking spaces, and from the parking lot, you will find trails that connect you directly to scenic locations such as the prairie, marsh, and quarry. A pit toilet, information kiosk, bike washing and repair station, as well as a drinking fountain can all be found just north of the parking lot as well!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just north of the Restored Prairie (Point of Interest 24) and the multi-use paved path on the south side of the park, this overlook, built in 2002, is a great spot for viewing the prairie or simply taking a rest in the shade. With benches and picnic tables, visitors can sit and take in the scenic beauty of the prairie. Listen to birds, journal, take a snack break, or chat with friends.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prairie Zone - Restored Prairie (24)</image:title>
<image:caption>Illinois is known as the Prairie State, as the state itself was once a large majority of prairie ecosystems. Due to population growth and development, far fewer prairies exist today. While this prairie is not one of the original remaining prairies that existed in the state prior to European settlement, it is land that has been dedicated to restoring this type of ecosystem. Conservation efforts are led by the Rockford Park District’s Natural Areas team to increase native biodiversity in the park and to help bring prairie areas back to the state. Check out the wildflowers, bumblebees, and even the state grass, Big Bluestem! View this prairie from the overlook (Point of Interest 23) or hike entire loop, which is a bit over a mile long.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Prairie Zone - Rydberg Road Entrance</image:title>
<image:caption>This is one of two entrances into Atwood Park and is where trail-users are encouraged to enter at. With four parking lots accessible from this entrance, visitors can get to a variety of multi-use trails around the park. Hike over the pedestrian bridge to access even more trails and ecosystems on the north side of the park. Whether you’re hiking, biking, running, or snowshoeing, Atwood Park trails have so much to offer!</image:caption>
